Learn about Pole Vaulting
Pole vaulting was invented long ago as an important way of crossing bridgeless canals. It eventually caught on as a competitive sport but the fundamental idea has stayed largely the same. What hasn't stayed the same however is the technology behind the poles used to hurtle athletes through the air. While bamboo was once the preferred choice of material, designers and engineers have since moved on to cutting edge materials such as carbon fibre that bring together a range of scientific and technological ideas, giving strength to the pole while remaining lightweight to carry.
