Saving Kakapo in New Zealand

Saving the Kakapo in New Zealand is the difficult job the Department of Conservation has taken on in order to save these amazing birds from certain extinction. Watch this wildlife conservation video and learn the story behind the Kakapo, a flightless parrot that was thought to be technically extinct until a new group of female Kakapos were found on Stewart Island in 1977. The remaining birds were moved to areas with no predators such as Codfish Island to ensure the eggs weren’t eaten by rats or other predators. There are around 120 Kakapo still alive today thanks to the work of conservationists and scientists who help Kakapo with specialized breeding programs and diets.
