- Skunks are mammals best known for their ability to spray an unpleasant scent as a form of defence.
- Their spray is strong enough for humans to notice it from miles away!
- There are around 10 different species of skunk, including hog nosed skunk, spotted skunk, hooded skunk and striped skunk.
- Most species have black and white striped fur but some are a different color.
- Larger species can reach lengths of around 94 cm (37 in).
- Skunks spend most of their time alone but will get together for warmth in dens or breeding.
- Skunks do not have great eyesight, struggling to see objects just 3 metres (10 feet) away.
- They make up for this with powerful hearing and a strong sense of smell.
- Although skunks can live as long as 10 years, they are more likely to survive for just 1 in the wild.
- Skunks are omnivores, eating both plants and animals. Examples of food they consume include lizards, frogs, worms, bees, rodents, insects, grass, leaves, nuts and berries.
