  • Chimpanzees are a species of great ape native to Africa.
  • They live in groups of roughly 20 to 150 individuals.
  • Male chimpanzees can weigh up to 70 kg (154 lb).
  • They have long arms and can pick up objects with both their hands and feet.
  • Chimpanzees are intelligent animals that are known for using tools, especially when hunting. They also form social groups such as hierarchies, coalitions and alliances.
  • They are comfortable both on the ground and in trees, where they swing from branch to branch.
  • Chimpanzees build nests in trees, changing locations every night.
  • They love fruit but will happily eat bark, seeds, leaves and other vegetation. They are mostly herbivores but can also feed on birds, eggs, insects and other small animals.
  • Chimpanzees display an open mouthed grin when feeling playful. They are also ticklish in a similar way to humans.
  • Chimpanzees are closely related to bonobos. Once thought of as a a subspecies of chimpanzee, bonobo are now recognized as being distinct. It is thought that the two species separated around one million years ago.
  • Chimpanzees and bonobos are the closest living relatives to humans.
  • It is believed that the line of chimpanzees diverged from our human ancestors around six million years ago.
  • Chimpanzees live for around 15 years in the wild on average (longer in captivity).
  • Chimpanzees are an endangered species at risk from habitat loss and poaching.
  • Their name is sometimes abbreviated to “chimp”.
  • Early studies of chimpanzees in the wild were conducted by the famous primatologist Jane Goodall.
