  • There are nearly 100 different species of antelope, most found in the savannahs of Africa.
  • They are also found in forests and bush as well as rocky, cold, dry and even swampy environments.
  • A group of antelope is known as a herd.
  • Antelope are generally fast runners and powerful jumpers.
  • Antelope rely on their speed and sharp senses to avoid being caught by predators. Their eyes are found on the sides of the head, giving them a wide field of view.
  • Antelope horns are typically used by males fighting over females rather than as protection against predators. They grow continuously as opposed to being shed annually like that of deers.
  • Arabian oryx are a type of antelope adapted to dry, desert conditions. In the 1970’s, they were extinct in the wild but have since been saved and reintroduced to their natural habitat.
  • India is home to antelope such as the chinkara, nilgai, blackbuck, four-horned antelope and Tibetan antelope.
  • The nilgai is the largest antelope found in Asia.
  • As the name suggests, four-horned antelope have four horns rather than two. They are a threatened species due to loss of natural habitat and targeting from trophy hunters.
  • The national animal of South Africa is the springbok, a type of antelope known for “stotting”, where they repeatedly leap into the air as high as 2 m (6.6 ft).
  • The pronghorn is sometimes called the “American antelope” but is not considered to be part of the antelope family.
