Fun Water Lesson Plans and Activities for Kids

Make Ice EarringsIce Earrings Activity

You and your students can have a lot of fun with this simple activity, especially if they have any interest in jewelry.

Transform some simple ice cubes into the latest fashion trend with a little science knowledge and the help of our easy lesson plan. Learn how to make ice earrings and enjoy this cool activity.

What you will need:

  • A ruler
  • A piece of string that is 20 cm long
  • Two ice cubes
  • A tea towel
  • A tray

Introduction:

  • It turns out there's more than one way to make jewelry. Let's avoid the old fashioned way and try something that's a little more interesting, or maybe should I say, a little cooler.

  • Did you know that you can use pressure to help melt ice? This will help as we attempt to make our ice earrings in the following activity.

  • To prove this fact try thinking about an ice skater. There is always a thin layer of water under the blades of ice skates, caused by the pressure of the ice skaters weight.

  • Can you think of a way to use pressure to make an earring from the string and two ice cubes?

Instructions:

  • Place the middle of the string between the two ice cubes.
  • Wrap the two ice cubes and string up in the tea towel while keeping the string stuck firmly in between and press the ice cubes together for about a minute.
  • Unwrap the ice cubes and admire your handy work. Tie the string in a loop. You have completed your first ice cube earring! If you want to complete the set then try making another.
  • Now that you have your new accessories will you be tempted to wear them? It's safe to say that you'd be making a fashion statement but what's cooler than wearing ice cubes as earrings!
